Feeling Blocked: What the Block May Be Protecting

What feels like procrastination or self-sabotage may once have protected you. Nessa Wei explains why Soul Alchemy begins by understanding what happens when you try to move forward.

Feeling Blocked: What the Block May Be Protecting

You know what you want to do, but you do not do it.

You want to ask for help, but when help appears, you find a reason it is not right.

You want a relationship, a new direction or a more visible life, yet each time you move towards it, something in you closes.

This is often what people mean when they say, I feel blocked.

The natural response is to look for the obstacle and remove it. If only we could identify the fear, clear the energy or find the right explanation, perhaps movement would become easy.

Sometimes it does become easier.

But before I work directly with a block, I want to understand what it has been doing for you.

A block is not always an enemy

Something that limits you now may once have helped you through a difficult time.

Perhaps you learnt not to ask because asking led to disappointment. Perhaps you kept your feelings private because there was no one who could meet them. Perhaps relying only on yourself gave you a sense of safety when other people were unpredictable.

These responses can become so familiar that they no longer feel like choices. They feel like facts:

No one will help me.

It is safer not to want too much.

If I let people see me, I will be hurt.

Years later, your circumstances may be different, but the old response still arrives first. You may call it procrastination, self-sabotage or an energetic block. I would also ask what it is trying to prevent.

This does not mean that the pattern must remain. It means we approach it with respect rather than treating it as a defective part of you.

Why I do not rush to remove it

In a Soul Alchemy Session, we may explore a repeated pattern through conversation, bodily awareness, meditation, light trance or shamanic techniques.

I rarely begin by trying to remove a block in the first session.

First, I want to understand what happens when you approach the place where movement stops.

What do you feel in your Body? What thought appears? What do you expect will happen next? Do you become frightened, doubtful, tired or suddenly very practical? Do you lose interest just as something becomes possible?

I also want to understand what support exists in your life now. A protective pattern formed in one set of circumstances. Change becomes more possible when we can see that the present is not identical to the past.

This first stage is not avoidance. It is how we decide whether deeper work is appropriate and whether we have enough trust to do it together.

Support may not arrive in the form you expected

Feeling blocked can also be connected with a very precise expectation of how support should appear.

Imagine that someone wants to feel the presence of her parents during ancestral work. She does not sense them and their absence feels painful. Then an impression of her grandmother arises.

Within the spiritual understanding of the session, this might be explored as another form of ancestral support.

But if the person believes that only her parents' presence would count, she may dismiss what appeared. The grandmother is not the answer she asked for, so the experience feels like no answer at all.

I would not tell her that my interpretation is correct. I would ask whether the impression feels comforting or meaningful to her. I would also give room to the disappointment that her parents did not appear.

The important question is not whether she accepts any form of support offered. It is whether she can notice what is present without forcing it to become what she hoped for.

Sometimes a block is not the absence of support. It is the difficulty of recognising support when it arrives differently.

From ‘I am blocked’ to ‘I close when this happens’

The sentence I am blocked can make the problem feel fixed and external. It sounds as though something has been placed in your way.

A more useful sentence might be:

When I ask for help and the response is not exactly what I hoped for, I close.

Or:

When an opportunity becomes real, I begin looking for reasons it will fail.

This language is not about blame. You did not necessarily choose the original protection consciously.

It is about recognising where choice may exist now.

You might still decide that the support being offered is not right for you. You might ask for something different. You might notice that you need more time before taking the next step.

What changes is that you are no longer waiting for an invisible force to release you. You are beginning to see the moment when you turn away and what you may need in order to respond differently.

Readiness matters

Wanting change and feeling ready to meet what the change brings are not always the same thing.

You may want intimacy and still feel alarmed when someone comes close. You may want visibility and still feel exposed when people begin to notice your work. You may want help and still distrust the person offering it.

None of this means that you are insincere.

It means the work needs an appropriate pace.

During a Soul Alchemy Session, your honest response matters. You can say that an image means nothing to you. You can disagree with my interpretation. You can tell me that a question feels too much or that you are not ready to continue in that direction.

Readiness does not mean being fearless. It means having enough capacity to remain involved and communicate what is happening.

If you are deeply depleted or difficult emotions are taking all your available energy, a receptive Healing Session may be a more suitable first step. Healing asks less active participation and gives you space to receive support before trying to understand the whole pattern.

A clearer place to begin

If you feel blocked, try completing these sentences:

  • I move towards what I want until...
  • When support appears, I usually...
  • What I fear might happen next is...
  • This response may once have protected me from...
  • To try something different now, I would need...

You do not need perfect answers. One specific moment is enough to begin.

In a Soul Alchemy Session, we can look at that moment together: what you wanted, what happened inside you and what kind of support would make another response possible.

The aim is not to force the block out of the way.

It is to understand why it is there, recognise what has changed and decide whether you are ready to move differently now.
