What Happens in a Healing Session — Before, During and Afterwards

What happens before, during and after a Healing Session? Nessa Wei explains how to prepare, what you may experience and how to give the work time to settle.

What Happens in a Healing Session — Before, During and Afterwards

You do not need to do anything to prepare for a Healing Session.

You do not need to arrive calm, understand exactly what is wrong or find a spiritual explanation for what you are feeling. You can come tired, unsettled or with a question that is still unfinished.

The session gives you time to rest and receive focused energy work. We also make space to talk about what brought you, notice what happens during the treatment and reflect on your experience afterwards.

Before your Healing Session

If possible, leave some quiet space in your day after the appointment.

You may want to sleep, take a slow walk or simply spend some time without immediately returning to work and responsibilities. I also recommend keeping the day of your session alcohol-free.

Between booking and arriving, you may notice that certain feelings or familiar triggers become more visible. In my experience, making an intention to change something can bring your attention towards what needs care.

You do not need to resolve any of this before you come.

Simply notice what has been happening, how it affects you and what you would like me to understand. Even an unfinished sentence can give us somewhere to begin:

I have been feeling unlike myself.

I cannot properly rest.

Something keeps happening and I do not understand why.

What happens during the session

We begin with a conversation about what has brought you and what feels most important now.

You then lie on the treatment table and receive the healing work. My approach draws on Plant Spirit Medicine, Taoist Stone Medicine and other Taoist practices, channelled energy and sound. Depending on what is appropriate, I may work with my Starsee Healing drum, Koshi bells or shamanic rattles.

You do not need to make anything happen. Most people simply rest while I work.

Emotions or physical sensations may arise. You may feel warmth, heaviness, movement, sadness or very little at all. There is no correct response and no expectation that you should experience a dramatic release.

If something feels uncomfortable, stuck or overwhelming, please tell me. You can speak during the session and you can always ask to pause.

Your actual experience matters more than what either of us thinks you ought to be experiencing.

At the end of the session

We make time to talk about what you noticed, how you feel and whether anything still needs attention.

Sometimes it is easy to describe the experience. Sometimes it takes time to find the words. Both are completely acceptable.

I also pay attention to whether talking is helping you understand what has happened or drawing you back into the same painful sequence. If we begin going around the story again, I may gently bring our attention back to what you are feeling now and what needs care.

The purpose is not to analyse every moment. It is to help you leave the session feeling more settled and able to recognise what your system is asking for next.

What may happen afterwards

An inner shift does not control how other people behave or remove every difficult circumstance from your life.

A familiar situation may still appear. Someone may ask something of you. A conversation may bring up the response you know so well. You may feel the impulse to explain yourself again, agree when you want to decline or continue an exchange that leaves you depleted.

The difference may be that you notice the moment of choice more clearly.

Where you have room, you may pause before answering. You may decide that you do not want to continue the conversation. You may recognise that something needs a boundary, further support or more time.

This is where your free will becomes part of the healing process. The work can support you, but the decisions remain yours.

Recognising a pattern and changing your response can take time. Finding this difficult does not mean that you have failed or undone the session.

Give the experience time to settle

Afterwards, rest wherever your circumstances allow.

Have the nap if you want one. Take a quiet walk. Drink water and give yourself some time before trying to explain everything that happened.

Notice what feels different, what remains difficult and where a small choice has become available to you.

If something continues to trouble you, becomes more intense or feels increasingly difficult to manage, seek the support appropriate to what you are experiencing. Healing work can complement medical, psychological and therapeutic care, but it does not replace it.

There is time to understand the experience through living as well as through talking about it.
