You Can Be Called to Help Others — and Still Need Time to Heal

You can be called to help others and still need time to heal. Nessa Wei explores why restoration, boundaries and readiness matter before returning to work that asks you to hold other people.

You Can Be Called to Help Others — and Still Need Time to Heal

Some people know, very deeply, that part of their life is about helping others.

They may teach, guide, heal, listen, create or hold space. The form differs, but the impulse is familiar: something in them wants to be in service.

Then life breaks open.

There may be a period of exhaustion, grief, illness, emotional collapse or profound disorientation. The person receives support. They begin to function again. And almost immediately, another pressure appears:

When can I go back to helping everyone else?

Sometimes the most responsible answer is: not yet.

Not because your gifts have disappeared or the difficult period has disqualified you from meaningful work. And not because you need to become perfectly healed before you are allowed to contribute.

You may simply need more time for the ground beneath you to become solid again.

Functioning again is not always the same as being restored

After a difficult period, certain signs of recovery can be easy to recognise. You are sleeping a little better. You can complete daily tasks. You can speak about what happened. You may have received counselling, medical care or medication that helped you through an acute stage.

All of that matters.

It does not always mean that every layer of the experience has been integrated.

The nervous system may still be braced. The Body may still carry exhaustion. A part of you may be trying to return quickly because being useful feels “safer” than being the person who still needs care.

This is not a diagnosis, rather a question of capacity:

Can you remain present when another person brings you their pain? Can you recognise what belongs to them without becoming flooded by your own experience? Can you listen without needing their progress to prove that you are well again?

Helping work asks something of the person offering it. Good intentions and real gifts matter, but so do steadiness, boundaries and the ability to return to yourself.

Your gifts have not gone anywhere

When you need healing, it can feel as though your calling has been taken away.

You may look at the person you were before and wonder whether you can still trust what you used to know. You may compare yourself with people who appear to be moving forward while you are still rebuilding. You may feel an urgency to demonstrate that you are ready.

I want to offer another possibility.

Your gifts may still be there. They may simply need a stronger place from which to be expressed.

Imagine trying to build a house on waterlogged ground. The design may be beautiful. The materials may be excellent. You may know exactly what you want to create. But before the structure can hold weight, the ground needs attention.

The groundwork is not separate from your calling. It is part of becoming able to carry it.

The wisdom of kintsugi

Kintsugi is often used as a comforting image: a broken bowl repaired with gold, its history visible rather than hidden.

What moves me in this image is not the idea that suffering automatically makes us more beautiful. Pain is not valuable simply because it happened.

The important part is the repair.

The pieces are not balanced loosely together while everyone agrees to admire the cracks. They are re-joined. The bowl becomes able to hold something again. Its history remains visible, but the wound is no longer an open edge.

Healing can be like this.

We do not have to erase what happened or return to the person we were before. We recognise the places that changed us. We give them care, time and support. Gradually, what once felt like a point of collapse may become part of the structure through which we understand ourselves and meet the world.

Gilding of the scars is not a performance. It is a true integration.

Why the urge to return can become so strong

For someone whose identity is connected with helping, receiving care can feel strangely uncomfortable.

You may be accustomed to being the capable one. You may know how to explain, reassure and find meaning. Sitting inside your own unfinished process can feel exposed.

Returning to work may promise relief from that exposure. If other people trust you again, perhaps you can trust yourself. If you can support someone else, perhaps the difficult period is officially over.

But another person should not have to become the evidence that you are ready.

There is dignity in allowing recovery to take the time it takes. There is also professional responsibility in recognising when your own material is still too close to the surface for you to hold somebody else safely.

This does not mean waiting for such time that you can hold your emotions. Healers, guides and practitioners remain human. We can be moved and have difficult days. We can continue our own therapeutic and spiritual work while serving others.

The question is whether there is enough inner room for the other person to remain at the centre of the work.

When Healing may need to come before Soul Alchemy

In my work, a Healing Session and a Soul Alchemy Session offer two different forms of support.

A Healing Session is the more receptive place to begin when you feel depleted, emotionally raw or unable to process much more. You do not need to arrive with a perfectly formed question. There are no expectations for a particular feeling or an emotional release. The work is directed towards restoration, energetic balance and helping you reconnect with your own inner resources.

A Soul Alchemy Session is more active. We explore a situation through conversation, bodily awareness and spiritual guidance. You need enough capacity to hear something that may be unexpected or uncomfortable, consider what it means and decide what you want to do with it in real life.

I often say that if you cannot speak about your issue without resorting to tears – you need Healing above all. Although tears alone do not decide which session you need. Crying can be healthy, relieving and deeply human.

I pay attention to what happens around the tears. Can you settle again? Can you stay in contact with yourself? Can you reflect on the situation without becoming overwhelmed for the rest of the day? Is there enough space inside you to work with what emerges?

If the answer is no, Healing is the kinder and more useful starting point.

Healing does not replace mental health care

Spiritual and energetic work can sit alongside counselling, psychotherapy, medical care and appropriate medication. It should not be used to tell someone to stop treatment or to reinterpret a mental health crisis as only a spiritual event.

If you are in acute distress, unable to keep yourself safe or struggling to function, please seek qualified medical or psychological support.

There can still be room for complementary work when the timing and circumstances are appropriate. The purpose to attend to the parts of your experience that you understand through energy, spirituality, meaning and the relationship between Body, Mind, Soul and Spirit.

Give yourself permission not to rush

If helping others is part of your path, a period of healing does not obstruct it, but enhances it.

It may deepen your understanding of it. It may change the way you work. It may clarify your boundaries, your methods and the people you are genuinely able to support.

But this depth cannot be forced by returning before you are ready.

Fill your own cup. Let the ground become firmer. Allow the pieces to be joined properly rather than held together by urgency.

You do not need to deny your gifts.

You need a place within yourself that is strong enough to hold them.
